Volkswagen tranny swap will it work?

89 jetta gl wolfs-berg ed tranny to a 92 volkswagen golf Gti ? both have 1.8L engines and 5 speed trannys please let me know if it will work for cheap or just bolt right up? also anyone who may no .. i blew my gtis clutch... i think... i went to stop the clutch went in but once in the spring stopped and it just went loose as if the cable snapped but it didn't.. the cable is fine but the lever is all loose? what could it be? if you can answer this it would save me from possibly riping the tranny out..
