Java update problem on vista computer, really need help please?

(Okay I have a Vista and have CA security center anti virus program) Okay so my computer need to update its java, and ill click it and a pop up will say something like "check internet connections and proxy" So i did and i wasnt sure what i was looking for so i looked it up and dont understand any of this computer talk D: i really need to update my java cause it now is affecting my internet. Facebook no longer shows up its just white, pictures (icons and such) have that lil red x where theyd be or just nothing at all. So what to do to get my computer to work?? Help me please (and speak in dumb down terms) thank you
